FOOD MYTHS: SOY:

Soybeans contain all nine essential amino acids for the body.

It is therefore a good source of vegetable protein, vitamins, and minerals crucial for reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

Soy, better natural

However, this can only be confirmed when eating soy in its natural form, such as edamame beans, or products made with them, such as tofu or miso. These contain no added sugar, fat, sodium, or preservatives.

Why do they say that we shouldn't consume it?

One of soy's components, estrogen-like isoflavones, has generated the most controversy. In early scientific studies, they were linked to the growth of cancer cells, and it was also believed that they affected female fertility and interfered with thyroid function.

The conclusions have been changing over the past few decades, and one of the most serious studies was published last year in the American journal Cancer. It determined that this legume of Asian origin does not pose a risk for developing breast cancer. On the contrary, it may be linked to a lower risk of death, according to the study, conducted over nine years, from 1995 to 2005.
